Parenting and Communication Skills Certificate

A lack of positive parenting skills has been identified as a contributing factor in a variety of social problems, including substance abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and disruptive behavior at home and in the classroom. This program is intended to help educators, counselors and parents understand child development and explore new positive parenting and communication skills that can be used to prevent or ameliorate negative situations in the home and classroom. The impacts on children of traumatic events such as divorce, death or incarceration of a family member are also examined.

The Certificate in Parenting and Communication Skills explores positive parenting and communication techniques and their ability to prevent or ameliorate negative family or classroom situations. The program also focuses on family adjustment to change or traumatic circumstances, like broken family relationships or the death or incarceration of a family member.

The program is for school administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents. It helps individuals understand child development and use parenting and communication skills in new ways. Parents and educators who communicate clearly on a daily basis are able to provide valuable feedback to students in terms of their capabilities and academic self-concept.

Completion of the program will enable participants to improve their understanding of child development, parenting programs, communication skills, and to act purposefully in designing classroom curricula.

Developed in collaboration with the following Riverside County departments: Office of Education, Consolidated Courts, Public School Services and Probation Department, Juvenile Division.
