If you would like to teach in ROP, a correctional facility, private school or military setting, earn your Career Technical Education (CTE) or Designated Subjects (DS) Special Subjects Credential. Learn how you can pass down your expertise to students who want to begin a vocational, technical or trade career.

Use your specialized knowledge in a vocation, technical or military field to help today's career technical or ROTC students gain an edge when you earn your Designated Subjects (DS) Credential in either Career Technical Education (CTE) or Special Subjects.

Designed For

Individuals who have en employment offer to teach Career Technical Education (CTE) or Special Subjects or individuals who have obtained a Preliminary DS CTE or Special Subjects Credential who need to enroll in and complete a Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CTC) approved program of study to clear their Preliminary Credential. The following industry sectors are available for DS CTE credentials:

Earning the Certificate

Prior to enrolling, please ensure that you meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. High school diploma or GED
  2. Current teaching position or offer of employment

Completion Requirements

  • Complete a total of 20 quarter units, with a grade of B or better.
  • Apply for the credential by providing:
    • State Credential Application Form 41-4
    • State Credential Application Fee of $70 (money order made payable to CCTC)
    • Work experience verification on letterhead (required for CTE only)
    • Completed Livescan Form with CTC as the agency

Quarter 1

Orientation to the Designated Subjects Credential Program

EDUC 814.7

An orientation for the vocational education, career technical education credential program including career opportunities, authorization, qualification for credentials, requirements, appeals process, and challenge of course content. Mandatory for applicants entering the vocational program.

DS Early Orientation to Teaching

EDUC X309.01

2 units

Introduction to Career Technical Education (CTE) program concepts, equity and diversity in the classroom, legal and ethical issues, lesson planning and strategies for teaching and managing an effective classroom environment are introduced in this early orientation for CTE teachers.

Quarter 2

DS Assessing Student Learning

EDUC X309.04

3 units

Strategies for planning instruction relevant to both the diverse needs of students and occupations. Methods for determining students' prior knowledge, establishing objectives and assessing and evaluating student achievement in order to improve instruction are presented.

Quarter 3

DS Teaching English Learners and Students with Special Needs

EDUC X309.05

3 units

Instructional strategies that provide all students with access to CTE curriculum. Methods for making content comprehensible to English learners and strategies for teaching special populations in CTE classrooms will be addressed. Relevant state and federal laws, current research and factors that affect language acquisition are presented.

Quarter 4

DS Classroom/Laboratory Management and Safety

2 units

Classroom management strategies that ensure student safety and develop and maintain an effective learning environment. A plan for preventative maintenance and a class budget will be developed.

DS Foundations and Professional Legal/Ethical Responsibility

EDUC X309.06

1.5 units

Concepts, themes and skills related to the CTE teaching profession including the history and traditions of CTE, its role in public education, and current ethical and legal issues related to professional conduct, misconduct and moral fitness for teachers.

Quarter 5

DS Curriculum and Instruction

EDUC X309.03

4 units

Curriculum development and instructional planning skills in relation to specific occupations. Coordination of goals, objectives, instructional strategies and activities that engage students in learning, safety considerations, materials, and assessments in the preparation of unit and lesson plans.

Quarter 6

Implementation of Health Instruction Framework for California Schools

EDUC X451.01

2 units

Practical ideas to use in implementing the goals of the Health Instruction Framework for California schools. Topics discussed will include mental health, family health, infectious diseases, nutrition, and the physiological and sociological effects of abuse of alcohol, narcotics, drugs and the use of tobacco.

Quarter 7

CPR and Basic First Aid

1 units

Basic first aid training that meets standards established by the Emergency Medical Services. This course will certify teachers who became credentialed in California after September 1, 1992 with training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

U.S. Constitution Examination

EDUC 850

Essential elements of the United States Constitution as it was originally formulated and its meaning as it has developed through amendment and judicial interpretation. Material presented, plus completion of out-of-class assignments, should prepare the student to pass the examination of the United States Constitution required for a teaching credential in the State of California. The examination is offered at the last class meeting.

DS Culminating Portfolio

Final evaluation and verification of candidate competency for Career Technical Education Credential and presentation of Culmination Portfolio. Overview of professional opportunities and guidance in career planning.
