Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems

Surveys air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems including cost and energy efficiency, load requirements, system design elements and tradeoffs in performance when evaluating various systems. Additional time is devoted to examine new technology and best practices currently being utilized in systems. Topics include:

  • Principles of constant volume, variable air volume, VVT and multizone applications
  • Heat pumps, fan coil, electrohydronic systems, double duct and water-cooled units
  • Refrigeration theory and its relation to HVAC systems
  • Duct systems, including design, materials, construction, sizing, and sample systems
  • Air distribution, indoor air quality, diffusers, and grills
  • Fan principles, fan types, selection and fan laws
  • Sound and vibration in fan systems
  • Exhaust and ventilation systems – design considerations
  • Piping system design, materials, sizing, and centrifugal pumps
  • Auxiliary correspondents, dampers, air filters, humidifiers, and duct heaters

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC): Equipment and Controls

Examines HVAC controls and equipment and their application to the many elements of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Emphasis is placed on commercial or industrial projects. Topics include control basics - pneumatic, electric, electronic, and digital controls; engineering data, such as equipment sizing, use of a psychrometric chart and conversion formulas; building management systems configuration; air handling units, terminal units, chillers, boilers; and building airflow, water and steam distribution systems.
